My friend Patty just ended another promising relationship. It seems that every time she gets close to someone, something happens. She says or does something to push her partner away. He reacts. It escalates. It’s over.
Patty’s been protecting herself.
It can be very scary to move into a new relationship after a painful breakup. You may have a massive fear of getting too close and being hurt again. That’s when your subconscious kicks in. You’ll hear yourself saying something tactless or unkind to drive a wedge between you, so you can feel safer and more comfortable. Do you blame yourself for getting into situations where you’ve been hurt? Many people do. I did! Then I learned how important it is to forgive other people, and how especially important it was to forgive myself. That was the hardest part.
It can be especially difficult to forgive people you feel have abused you. Yet I’ve learned that we’ve created contracts with people before we are born, as part of our curriculum in the school of life… even the people who abused us!

Everything in your life is a gift. Adversity is your opportunity to strengthen your resolve and grow grander, and fly free… like the butterfly!
It’s an amazing and complex process for a caterpillar to become a butterfly that involves spinning itself into a cocoon, digesting itself, (except for imaginal disks for the body parts necessary for its transformation), and finally emerging triumphantly from its cocoon as a magnificent creature.
I once heard a story of a kind hearted woman who noticed a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. (more…)
